Start of shift walkthrough

The start of shift check, from the phone to the desk.

Four films, one for each service. Each follows one crew member round one vehicle at the start of shift, to the fault that changes its status on the dashboard. Short of time? Start with the ambulance film.

Film 2 of 4: Ambulance

Dressings used on a night case were never replaced. The start of shift count catches it, A12 goes Restricted until restocked, and a step light goes to the auto electrician.

Three trauma dressings used overnight were never replaced. Rosa’s start of shift count finds it, and A12 is Restricted until they are.

  1. 06:40, the night’s handover. 06:40 at Station 4. Paramedic Rosa Okafor scans the QR tag on ambulance A12. The night shift used trauma dressings on case 2207. The stretcher and defibrillator are both close to service. One tap opens the start of shift check.
  2. Walking round A12. The same framed walkaround as every vehicle: an outline at each position, live camera only. Each photo is stamped with the time, GPS position and heading, so the record shows the walk happened. On the dashboard, A12’s photos are filed by position.
  3. Lights and siren. Every walkaround checks the emergency lights and siren. The crew switches everything on and photographs the lights running. Each light and each siren tone is passed or failed. A fail restricts A12 and needs a photo. The results land in the check record with the photo beside them.
  4. Oxygen. Oxygen first. Rosa photographs the main cylinder’s gauge, then reads every cylinder against the minimum. Each pressure lands on the dashboard with a bar showing its margin over the limit.
  5. Services coming due. The defibrillator runs its self-test, and Rosa photographs the screen as proof. Pads expiry and the service dates for the defibrillator, stretcher and stair chair are checked on board. The stretcher is due for service in 9 days. Alerts shows it with its history from the equipment register.
  6. Three dressings short. Rosa counts the consumables cupboard by cupboard against A12’s par levels. Trauma dressings: 5 of 8. Below par on this item restricts A12, and the app says so at once. A box of gloves short is recorded but does not restrict. The service decides which shortages matter.
  7. A step light out. In the cab, Rosa reads the odometer with a photo and checks the radio and data terminal. The rear step light is out: a minor defect, with a photo. On its own it does not restrict A12. It lands on the defect board for the workshop to pick up.
  8. A12 goes Restricted. Rosa submits the check: 30 results, 11 photos and one defect. No signal in the plant room. It is saved on the phone and sends itself when signal returns. The board shows A12 Restricted until the dressings are restocked, with every reason listed. The fleet manager books the step light in with the auto electrician for Thursday.

Illustrated from the real crew app and dashboard. Results reach the dashboard when the crew submits, straight away with signal or later without it. Limits, items and wording are set by each organisation. People, vehicles and stations are invented.

What crews can check

Every item your procedure needs, checked the way it should be.

Templates are built from these item types. Each result is kept with the limit and template version it was checked against.

Readings with limits

A number checked against your minimum or maximum. You choose what a breach does to the vehicle.

  • Pump pressure at testkPa
  • Time to primes
  • Water and foam tank levels%
  • Oxygen cylinder pressurekPa

Pass or fail

A plain check. A fail can restrict the vehicle or take it off run, as you decide.

  • Emergency warning lightsfail: restricted
  • Siren, every tonefail: restricted
  • Pump primesfail: off run
  • Defibrillator self-testfail: off run

Counts against par

Equipment counted locker by locker against the level it should carry.

  • Delivery hosespar 8
  • SCBA setspar 4
  • Burns dressingspar 6

Compliance dates

Expiry dates checked on the vehicle, with a warning before they lapse.

  • Registrationdate
  • Extinguisher service tagdate
  • Defibrillator padsdate
  • First aid kitdate

Tyres

A framed photo of every tyre, with tread depth and pressure against your limits.

  • Tread depthmm
  • PressurekPa
  • Sidewall conditionpass or fail

Odometer and engine hours

Photographed and read. Never allowed to go backwards, and a big jump is flagged.

  • Odometerkm
  • Engine hoursh
  • Vessel and plant hoursh

Framed walkaround photos

A shadowed outline for every position, live camera only, each photo stamped with time, place and heading.

  • Road vehicles6 positions + cab
  • Trailers4 positions
  • Vessels4 positions + helm

Defects and damage

Defects with a severity that sets the vehicle status. Damage marked on a drawing for an officer to review.

  • Criticaloff run
  • Majorrestricted
  • Minor or observationno change

Photos and signatures

Any item can require a photo. Sign-offs where your procedure needs them.

  • Gauge at test pressurephoto
  • Locker seal intactphoto
  • Officer sign-offsignature
